Booze ban mum is the picture of health

Sue quits cravings and urges others to kick lockdown habits I decided to try to be the fittest I could be by next year

A MUM who kicked the booze a year ago and has just given up takeaways is urging people to ditch new lockdown bad habits.

Sue Masterson, 43, who lives in Co Offaly, is refusing to give in to cravings for a battered sausage meal with garlic sauce and Diet Coke – and has decided to be the fittest she can be by this time next year.

The challenge-fan mum of two is also urging people who have been drinking and eating more in lockdown to kick habits now before they become a problem when quarantine ends.

She said: “I always loved my bottle of wine on a Friday and Saturday nights but then found I was opening another and having a glass a couple of nights during the week.

“I didn’t like the habit I was forming and when the One Year No Beer challenge popped into my social media, I jumped at it because I’m a woman who is driven by goals and challenges. I worked too hard to raise my boys and get where I am – I wasn’t going to let myself go down a slippery slope.

“At the beginning, I drank alcohol free beer on a Friday night but now it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

“I don’t go out much but I’m not the nervous type to need a drink when I socialise anyway – so aside from the habit, I didn’t need alcohol in my life.

“Since I celebrated being a year off it last week, five people have undertaken to do it, which to me is success.”

Sue, who documents her journey on her Facebook page, Miss Positively Positive, realised she needed another challenge to fill the void – so it’s day 81 of no takeaways. She added: “I loved, loved, loved my takeaways – especially Chinese food and chipper food. My favourite was a battered sausage meal with garlic sauce and Diet Coke.

“But I’ve decided I’m giving it up for a year too and I’m going to be the fittest I can be by next year.

“I won’t of course deprive my two boys of a takeaway if they want one but for me, it’s the fakeaway all the way with homemade curries and other meals.

“Since I gave up the drink and the takeaways, I’ve much more money in my bank, I’m slimmer, my skin is clearer and my mental and physical health has never been better.

“I know people over the last number of weeks are in lockdown and are eating and drinking more but I’d just say be careful – habits are easy to form but hard to break.

“Life will become normal again but you’ll be faced with a huge habit to break before returning to work.”
