THREE CHEERS BEERS FOR CAHIR Laois dual star Healy in pain after charity effort

- BY PAUL KEANE

LAOIS footballer Cahir Healy admits completing his own unique London marathon left him feeling drained and ‘hungover’.

London based Healy kicked 2,000 hurling and football points in a park on Sunday over nine gruelling hours, clocking up a 42km marathon in the process.

The epic challenge has so far raised over £16,500 pounds for three causes; Doitfordan, the Midlands Regional Hospital and the NHS.

Portlaoise man Healy returned to work as a primary school teacher in London yesterday with heavily blistered hands and in his shins and groin.

But the experienced defender reported no fresh knee trouble having underwent surgery just nine weeks ago after separate cruciate lay-offs in 2017 and 2019.

Healy said: “I feel hungover for some reason. I’m just glad to have it done, it was hanging over me for a long time, that torture that I was going to have to go through, so I’m glad it’s over.”

The dual star felt a little embarrassed as a small crowd gathered to cheer him on.

He told Midlands 103 radio: “It was funny, relief was probably the biggest feeling. There were probably six or seven people still with me at that stage and they were clapping. You were kind of half embarrassed because you haven’t won a game or there’s no jumping around celebrating.

“It’s just, ‘Right, that’s finished’. But they’re clapping and you’re almost a little bit embarrassed to be honest. My phone has been blowing up with messages and stuff. I’m really humbled by that. The support and goodwill has been unreal, I’m very taken aback by it.”

Healy hopes to feature for Laois later in the year if a Championship does go ahead and he can steer clear of injury. He said: “I’ll probpains ably have to take two or three days off training to recover properly from this but then it’s really full steam ahead with running and trying to just get fit again to play. But who knows when that will be.”

Healy’s mood darkened when discussing the issue of teachers in the UK not wearing face masks or any form of personal protective equipment.

That’s despite a government recommendation to wear face coverings in scenarios where it’s difficult to maintain social distancing.

Healy said: “My problem is the contradiction. They’re

saying it’s safe for teachers to go back without masks and there won’t be social distancing in school. We’ve got to accept it’s impossible in a primary school setting.

“I’m going in today to look after six children, vulnerable children and the key worker children. We can’t get them to social distance, with six of them.

“So I don’t understand how their advice is ‘Wear a mask in public and outside’, where they’ve already said transmission is less likely than in an enclosed space, they’re saying to teachers, ‘You don’t need a mask or gloves, you’re in an enclosed space’. That’s my big issue. It’s either safe or it’s not.”
