FOUND OUT DAD’S BEEN TEXTING HIS LOVER

Recently, I suspected my dad was up to something as he’s been glued to his phone and keeps disappearing outside with it for a cigarette or to go for another walk, which is odd in itself as he was never bothered about walking before lockdown.

When he went for a shower the other night, I found his phone and looked through his texts, and found loads under the initial ‘R’, which were obviously from a woman. It was also clear they’d been having some kind of relationship as they were flirtatious and mentioned missing each other and talking about what they’d do when they could meet up again.

I’m 18 and don’t know what to do for the best. I’m pretty sure my mum has no idea what’s been

going on. I’m also worried my dad will go nuts after I looked through his private messages. What should I do?

I think you should talk to your dad first – maybe on a walk, so your mum’s not around – and just tell him what you found. Explain you were worried as he was acting strangely and that’s why you looked at his phone.

He might be angry that you snooped, but I think he’ll also be worried you’ve found out and also upset that he’s let you down.

Maybe your mum knows, maybe she doesn’t, but I understand you feeling angry for her. However, I would give your dad the opportunity to talk to your mum himself. Now the cat’s out of the bag, I’m sure he’ll feel he has to deal with it.

Let your parents sort this out between them and, remember, whatever happens, they love you and that’s not going to change.
