A BAN on evictions and rent increases should be extended, new Housing Minister Darragh O’brien was told yesterday.
Sinn Fein TD Eoin O Broin said the protections should stay for the foreseeable future.
He added: “The ban on evictions and rent increases has undoubtedly kept families in their homes amid the economic crisis sparked by the Covid-19 pandemic”
Mr O Broin said if Sinn Fein was in power it would extend the ban on rent increases for three years and give people a break.

Nathan, 30, said: “I have had a few people turn up to the door and I have received a few disturbing letters where I was very worried about the mental health of the person writing them.
“I wasn’t that concerned but my family were worried for me so I ended up having to put them on record.
“Mental health is a really serious issue and you don’t know who has been affected.”
Asked if he ever had to take a restraining order out against a fan, he told RSVP Magazine: “Not just yet.
“I have been to the police a couple of times over worrying issues in the past but I haven’t had to get a restraining order so far.”
Nathan, who is one of the most eligible in country currently single.
But he admitted he isn’t interested in the social media and online dating world at the minute and isn’t ready to mingle just yet.
But that hasn’t stopped others from signing up to dating apps such as Bumble and Tinder on his behalf. The singer revealed he has been told about people using his images for fake profiles online.
Nathan said: “I have never signed up for a dating app but I have received a lot of messages from people saying they saw my face on one.
“There are apparently lads that use my pictures, which I thought was pretty funny. If they manage to get a date from my face, then fair play to them.”
Despite being catfished, Nathan isn’t too worried that there are men out there pretending to be him.
He added: “To be honest, there are better pictures of other lads that they could use instead of mine.”

Brother Jake cut Nathan’s hair on RTE
brother Jake in his home in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, all summer while performing for fans and interacting with them daily on social media.
He said: “We are very lucky that we can all stay in contact. If this happened in the 70s or 80s it would have been a different story.”
The singer also opened up about how the death of a close friend and the corobachelors navirus pandemic have made him reassess his priorities.
He said: “This year especially it’s been pretty terrible for everybody.
“In particular I lost one of my best friends earlier this year, a pal of mine named Nicky James who was basically my mentor throughout my career singing-wise.
“He used to get me gigs and, as I say, mentor me since I was a kid and he passed away earlier this year.
“Then Covid-19 kicked off and it definitely has made me realise that life isn’t all about work.
“We can get very one-minded and tunnelvisioned on our career and it’s not all about that. “There’s no point in working that hard if you can’t sit back to enjoy it.”
