WE’RE off to see the Wizard… for the 12th time.

Film fans are comfort-watching up to a dozen repeats of their favourite movies to escape everyday life, a survey says.

The Wizard of Oz, Dirty Dancing and Die Hard topped the list of most rewatched movies, with two thirds of adults admitting that they like returning to golden oldies.

Fifteen of the top 20 most rewatched movies are seen more than 10 times between the ages of 18 and 60.

They include the original three Star Wars films, Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music, The Breakfast Club, Back to the Future and Rocky.

Eight out of 10 said old films offer a sense of comfort and more than a third said it made their worries vanish temporarily. The survey by NOW TV found a fifth of movie buffs tune in from the bathroom to watch undisturbed on a tablet or phone.

One in 10 have worn headphones and pretended to be on a work-related Zoom video call while secretly indulging in classics such as Lethal Weapon, Ghostbusters and Top Gun.

Two thirds watch from the sofa, one in five snuggle down in bed and one in 20 viewers soak in the bath.

The survey found that, on average, we watch 18 hours of telly a week – seven more than before the lockdown.

Trying to find a film the whole family will watch causes two-and-ahalf hours of arguments a month.

Marina Storti, NOW TV managing director, said: “Watching our favourite films and TV shows is the ultimate comfort blanket in times of worry.”
