Home statue for Big Jack

PLANS to build a statue in tribute to Jack Charlton have got the go-ahead.

Civic chiefs in the Republic gaffer’s hometown of Ashington, Northumberland, backed Labour councillor Liam Lavery’s idea.

Mr Lavery has contacted sculptor Tom Maley, the man behind the Alan Shearer statue at St James’ Park in Newcastle.

He said: “The idea was passed unanimously by the council. Some businesses have pledged funding.”
