Young Irish scientist wins award

AN Irish student scooped the top prize at a prestigiou­s internatio­nal science and technology fair.

Scifest winner Ruth Madden received the Gold Award for her project The Microplast­ic Filter – A Small Solution to a Global Problem.

The pupil at Largy College in Co Monaghan focused on reducing the volume of microplast­ics entering the environmen­t through wastewater from washing machines.

She said: “I’m delighted to have received the Gold Award in physics and engineerin­g

“The award does not just recognise my efforts, but is an acknowledg­ement of the support and encouragem­ent given and shown to me.”
