Win the title and Gerrard is an Ibrox legend

-

TONIGHT, Rangers will try to overturn a two-goal deficit against Bayer Leverkusen and progress to the last eight of the Europa League. It’s a big ask, but defeat won’t be the end of the world.

That will come if they fail to win the Scottish title this season and Celtic achieve a record-breaking 10-in-a-row. Chris Sutton says Steven Gerrard (right) is already a borderline failure after ending up trophy-less in two full seasons as Ibrox boss.

Which is a bit harsh, considering what he inherited, his record in Europe and the dominance that a much richer Celtic have enjoyed in recent years.

But Gerrard, more than anyone, will know he has to lift a trophy this season.

And if it’s the title, he’ll go from being on the border of failure to instant legendary status.
