Blues are the BIG spenders

-

in one transfer window. Chelsea spent just over £200m in 2017 but this year’s figures will eclipse that total and could go even higher if they also manage to bring in a goalkeeper. Blues manager Frank Lampard has doubts about Kepa Arrizabalaga (below) and is in the market for a replacement if the Spain stopper leaves.

But it is the signing of Havertz that Lampard has prioritised this week, with the 21-year-old forward set to sign a five-year deal.

Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller, the former German international striker, last night described talk that Havertz was on the brink of leaving as “nonsense.”

But those close to the deal expect it to happen within days as the Bundesliga club have won the battle to receive a huge chunk of the fee up front.

England full-back Chilwell underwent medical checks yesterday on his injured heel but this is not expected to scupper his move. He’s rated one of the best left-backs in Europe.

Brazil great Silva, who is leaving PSG as a free agent after their Champions League final defeat by Bayern Munich on Sunday, is also set to move to Stamford Bridge. The 35-year-old has been offered a one-year deal with an option for a further year, and will bring a wealth of experience.

Chelsea are preparing a clear-out to help claw back some of the money.

But their transfer budget had already been boosted by the sales last summer of Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata when the club were still under a transfer ban.

The summer splash is a huge statement of intent from the Londoners who, under Lampard (top), reached the FA Cup final last term and finished fourth in the League.
