SCANNAL: PHILIP CAIRNS THE BOY WHO NEVER CAME HOME
RTE One, 7pm
Many important events that affected the lives of Irish people happened in 1986.
It was the year Jack Charlton was appointed Ireland manager, musician Phil Lynott died and Hurricane Charley battered the nation.
But in October of that year one event more than any other struck a frightening chord with the country.
Philip Cairns, a 13-year-old schoolboy, disappeared without trace while walking back to his school in Rathfarnham after having his lunch at home.
The question of what happened to him that day still remains shrouded in mystery.
Scannal looks back at the various twists and turns the case has taken over the last 34 years, the extensive Garda investigation, the media coverage, and the rumours and speculation that surrounded the mystery.
