I DON’T WANT IT TO BE PAUL OVER

- BY PAUL KEANE

CARLOW footballer Paul Broderick has not closed the door on featuring for his county in the Championship.

But the 2018 All Star nominee will not be resuming county training this week and he has not played for his club Tinryland over Covid-19 virus fears given his underlying heart condition and the fact his spleen was removed as a teenager. But the prolific forward told the new Peil Adore podcast he has not completely ruled out playing this year and does not want his career to end on such a low. Broderick has also been in touch with the Gaelic Players Association who are endeavouring to provide him with expert medical opinion.

He said: “Obviously the words I’d love to hear are, ‘You’re just as likely to pick up something in work as you are on a field and to be honest with you someone in your condition at your age, you’ll be fine’.

“If I heard that it’s like, ‘Right, they’re not going to say yes but that’s a yes to me’. That’s where I’m at at the moment.”

Schoolteacher Broderick admitted he felt “foolish” at first for not playing.

He continued: “I probably felt foolish 10 weeks ago because I’m someone who is fit and healthy.

“It’s 10 weeks on and I’m looking at it in a more positive light whereas I was thinking, ‘When will I get back?’ a couple of weeks ago. I don’t want it to be the end obviously because you’re not really ending on your own terms.”
