On last night’s telly

Morning Live, BBC1 ★ ★ ★

If yesterday was your first lockdown day at home you may have been left somewhat puzzled by BBC1’ s post- breakfast offering.

However, despite the studio set looking like someone has colourised an old episode of Steptoe & Son for a laugh, I can assure you this is a brand new show. If the cost- cutting BBC has its way, this cheap and cheerful magazine show could well become the centrepiece of its daytime schedule.

Two weeks into an eight- week experiment, it is already pulling in viewing figures to rival Holly and Phil’s This Morning.

And I’m willing to bet its production costs are less than Holly’s weekly wardrobe budget. The BBC

might have to do something about those opening credits though.

A woman drying some dishes is then followed by a woman loading a washing machine, followed by a woman washing some dishes, followed by a woman pegging out some laundry.

That’s just not very 21st century is it?

Next there will be a prime- time motoring show that only has male presenters.

As for the hosts of Morning Live, my best guess is they’re still

waiting for the chemistry to kick in. Kym Marsh doesn’t appear at her most relaxed in front of an autocue, while Gethin Jones clearly can’t wait for the next Strictly Come Dancing item to give him an excuse to get up from his vintage sofa.

More often than not they are outshone by resident cutie, Oliver the Labrador.

Following yesterday’s discussion about how best to approach lockdown, Ollie promptly stretched out on the studio rug and nodded off.

Dogs just know.

I’ll bet the production costs are less than Holly’s wardrobe bill
