SINN Fein has tabled a motion of no confidence in Leo Varadkar.

Time is being set aside in the Dail next week when the Tanaiste will face further questions over his leaking of Government documents.

The lead Opposition party is keeping up the pressure on him over the revelation that he leaked papers to a doctor friend.

Mr Varadkar gave a copy of a confidential GP contract to his mate Dr Matiu O Tuathail, president of the now defunct National Association of General Practitioners.

This was a rival organisation to the Irish Medical Organisation, the officiallysanctioned body to negotiate with the Government on behalf of GPS for their new medical cards contract.

Mr Varadkar has apologised for what he called “bad practice” and the Taoiseach has accepted this and is ready to move on.

A spokesman for the republican party said: “Sinn Fein is tabling a motion of no confidence in the Tanaiste Leo Var dakar, which will be debated during our Private Members time on Tuesday.

“We took the decision due to the seriousness of this situation and the fact that the Tanaiste has faced no sanction nor has he given a credible account for his actions in providing confidential information to a friend.

“This motion will allow the Dail to say to the people that no one is above being held to account and that there are consequences when you act as Leo Vardakar has done.”

Taoiseach Micheal Martin has slammed Sinn Fein’s motion of no confidence in Mr Varadkar, stating: “I think he [ Leo Varadkar] has said it was an error of judgment, I do think he accepts it was wrong.

“But I do think the Sinn Fein moti o n i s a d i s p r o p o r t i o n a t e response.

“And I think a destabilising move of this kind at this particular juncture so early after a general election I don’t think is the appropriate response.”
