ELECTION ‘ WASN’T RIGGED’

- BY CIARA PHELAN Political Correspondent

THE Taoiseach has hit back at Donald Trump’s claims the US election is “rigged”.

Micheal Martin said it was clear to him that everything possible was being done to protect the integrity of the process and the counting of votes is “well organised”.

He added: “It’s very clear to me the various administrators in the various counties and states are doing everything they can to protect the integrity of the vote and make sure that every citizen’s vote is counted.

“And that’s the way it should be and despite what all is being said, I think that is coming through to any audience that’s watching this. “That this is being well organised and attention is being paid to detail and people have a route to redress if people feel they have issues.”

The Taosieach was speaking to Sky News after yesterday’s British- Irish

council and said he is looking forward to working with “whoever gets elected”.

But he appeared to disagree with Mr Trump who has blasted the election as a “fraud”.

He said: “Absolutely every vote should be counted and has to be counted. What is clear to me though is people in America wanted to have their say.

“They came out in large numbers, those who voted early in terms of mail- in votes and those who voted on election day and because of the coronavirus I think it was a very wise way of organising the election in the manner in which it was organised.”
