‘ Floating’ ship hull of a sight
IT LOOKS like Ballycotton’s MV Alta may have some competition as another ghostly ship has been spotted off Cork.
A strange picture taken from Fountainstown on Thursday shows a vessel appearing to float in thin air as it pulls out of the harbour.
The amazing shot was taken by local man Brendan Russell who said he’s been informed it may be a case of Fata Morgana, which is a kind of “superior mirage”.
It occurs when the sun heats the air above the ocean, but the air closer to the water stays cool. The top layer of the sea is still warm, causing a distortion in the light and creating a bend effect.
Another ship, the MV Alta, still lays unclaimed at the bottom of cliffs at Ballycotton and more than € 200,000 has already been spent making it safe.
