Your weekly gardening to- do list

Gather garden canes, clean them, remove any rotten ends and stand them in a deep can of plant- friendly wood preservative for several days.

Pick your last greenhouse tomatoes. Use undersize fruit to make chutney, and put larger ones in a box with a banana in a cool, dark place indoors to encourage them to ripen. If you are planning a new lawn from turf, complete soil preparations. Dig well and remove rubbish, give the area a thorough treading and raking to firm and level the surface, then unroll turf

over it.
