Misery guts Haller told he has to get smiles better

- BY TONY BANKS

DAVID MOYES has a message for his misery guts striker Sebastien Haller: smile!

The Hammers manager wants his Ivory Coast star to lighten up and look like he is enjoying himself on the pitch – and then maybe the goals will come.

Haller, picked by the Iv or y Coast f or t heir Africa Cup of Nations g a mes t h i s month d e s p i t e w i n n i n g Under - 21 caps f or France, has netted j ust once i n t h e Premier League this season.

The £ 45million club- record signing

( l eft) scored only seven times in the league last term and has str uggled to hold down a starting place. But the hamstring injury which has r uled Michail Antonio out of tonight’s clash with Fulham has handed former Eintracht Frankfurt striker Haller another chance to show what he can do.

The 26- year- old has come under f ire for his downbeat manner in games and Moyes said: “I ’ve said to him many times, a smile now and again makes a big difference.

“Maybe I ’m not the best guy to be saying that! But Seb is a good guy to be around around, his work has been very good. I hope we can get the best from him but also we need him to be motivated. Goals are the moment when you normally see excitement from a goalscorer.

“But i f you l ook at his goals for Frankfurt, he celebrates in the same manner, he doesn’t always smile. We’re not seeing anything different.”

But Moyes ( right) is convinced that Haller can still be a success in the Premier League: “He’s got a really big reputation in Europe and I hope he can continue to build that here,” the Scot said.

“It takes time to settle in the Premier League. We have always said to Seb he will get his opportunity.

“This is a big chance for him to show what he can do and to show why West Ham value him so highly.

“We have got the makings of a good team and I want Seb to be part of that.”
