1978: Former world heavyweigh­t boxing champion Gene Tunney died. He beat Jack Dempsey on points to win the title in 1926 and a year later retained it with another points win over Dempsey. Tunney retired as undefeated champion in 1928.

1987: Manchester City’s Tony Adcock, Paul Stewart and David White all scored hat- tricks in a 10- 1 demolition of Huddersfie­ld. Paula Radcliffe won the New York Marathon.
