Solskjaer. “It’s not long ago that we were the best thing since sliced bread when we beat RB Leipzig and Paris Saint- Germain.”

And on the eve of the game that could determine his fate, Solskjaer said he still believes he can be a success as manager at Old Trafford and that he has the support of the club’s hierarchy.

“If I don’t trust my beliefs and values, and my staff’s quality and my players’ quality, who else should?” added Solskjaer.

“I’m not happy being under pressure. But I’ve never really been in too dark a place.

“The pressure of leading and managing United, you have to have strong shoulders and a strong head to carry.

“That’s how it is in football. You have to have that belief in yourself, the club, the players.

“The club have been very positive and shown me their character and strong leadership. I’ve always had a very good, open, honest and positive dialogue with the club.”
