ENGLAND ICE TIE IN DOUBT

- BY JOHN CROSS

ENGLAND may be forced to move their Nations League game with Iceland from Wembley to a neutral venue because of the latest coronavirus travel restrictions.

And Premier League clubs are joining together to stop their players reporting for international duty if it means they have to quarantine for 14 days.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate expects to learn in the next few days whether the game a week on Wednesday can go ahead.

The problem has arisen because of the UK Government’s Denmark travel ban, put in place after a new strain of coronavirus mutated to humans from mink being farmed in the country.

It does not include an elite sport exemption.

Iceland play Denmark mark in Copenhagen three ee days before the Wembley clash, so cannot travel to the UK. There could also be chaos in the Premier League, with Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel, Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen and Southampton’s Jannick Vestergaard due to join the Denmark squad next week.

Schmeichel ( top) said: “It’s politics, I don’t think it has a lot to do with science.

“The politics of it is the Government has made a decision for now and I hope they come to their senses. We’re very protected, we’re in a bubble, we get tested all the time.”

Tottenham’s Pierre- Emile Hojbjerg was also called up by Denmark and Jose Mourinho has devised a plan to avoid the prospect of 14- days self- isolation.

The Spurs boss ( above) said: “The situation is simple: the first match is a friendly, Denmark v Sweden, he doesn’t go. The second game is Nations League, at home, Copenhagen, and he’s banned because of a yellow card against England so he’s not going.

“The third game is Belgium v Denmark so he stays with us, works with us and goes to Belgium to play with pride for his national team.”
