Non- league Magpies stun 2013 Cup winners Wigan
CO N N O R H A L L wa s Chorley’s giant- killing hero as his extra- time goal sent 20 1 3 w i n n e r s Wi g a n crashing out of the FA Cup.
Chorley had already staged a dramatic comeback from two goals down after Wigan had Adam Long sent off.
Then Hall’s stri ke ( ri ght) ensured the National League North strugglers are in tonight’s second- round draw.
Cockahoop Chorley coach
Jamie Vermiglio, celebrating his 100th game in charge, said of Hall’s winner : “I thought he was going down for a penalty.
“And then he just managed to clip his shot in.
“The sending- off helped us, but we still needed to go on the front foot and be clinical. It’s great for the club.
“My grandad was a season ticket holder at Wigan, but it’s my first time here. It’s a great achievement for us to make the second round.
“We will be prepared , I might not s e e t h e d r aw though. As a headmaster, I could still be at school!”
Defeat adds to the gloom enveloping the Latics, who are bottom of League One and still awaiting a takeover by Spanish bidders to stave off a potential 15- point deduction.
Wigan boss John Sheridan said: “It was a very poor result. Full credit to Chorley but I expected us to get a positive result, and at two goals up we looked comfortable. But the sending- off changed the game.
“My players need to get a grip, be ruthless and g e t o v e r t h e l i n e .
Players have to show some devil and take responsibility.”
Wigan sailed into a 2- 0 halftime l ead against their near n e i g hb o ur s t hank s t o J o e Garner and Tom James.
Then Long got a straight red f o r hi s l a s t - di t c h f o ul o n Cardwell just before the break.
Elliot Newby gave Chorley a glimmer of hope and it was no surprise when Cardwell scored.
Hall, on loan from Woking, completed the comeback.
