Deluded Don has cost so many lives

-

IF there was a soundtrack to Donald Trump’s presidency, many songs would make the shortlist for the final cut.

He would ultimately want those he took on his Covid superspreader tour before the election which included hits like Macho Man, My Way and YMCA ( I know, right).

But for most hits like I will survive have begun taking on The Star- Spangled Banner for the national anthem.

Now amid a surge in Covid cases, record daily death tolls and a leader more focused on falsely claiming the election was “stolen”, there is a late contender for the album – Too Much, Too Little, Too Late.

As Trump and his circle continue to disregard basic health protections a n d s h o w w i l f u l n e g l i g e n c e towards the safety of others, no other country finds itself in such dire difficulties.

Today, as other nations see their R numbers falling, the US has a sevenday average of 2,249 fatalities while approaching 300,000 total deaths.

A staggering 15 million people have been infected.

Now, with hi s i nc ompet e nce assured, Trump’s fury has been sent spiralling off the charts on the world stage not by an adversary but by one of America’s greatest allies – the UK.

In the decision to become the first country to approve a coronavirus vaccine, made by US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, Britain spread fury inside the White House.

Trump accused his own US vaccine agency of delaying the medicine’s green light in the States for political reasons claiming they had conspired against him.

It saw the heads of Pfizer and Moderna turn down an invitation to appear at Tuesday’s White House Vaccine Summit, such was their disgust at the allegation.

Now, re al i si ng hi s l e g a c y w i l l b e t h e greatest failure by any world leader tasked with f i ghting the pandemic, Trump remains unable to put American lives above his ego.

It was seen this week as he demanded the US follow the UK’S lead and roll out the vaccine immediately. Not because he wants to save lives but because he fears President- elect Joe Biden will receive the credit for the cure.

Much like his false election claim, he feels his successor will “steal” the limelight he craves.

On Tuesday he signed a toothless Executive Order to ensure priority access for vaccines procured was given to the American people before assisting others. Mere postering.

It was all, like much of his presidency, merely for show rather than substance.

But after 10 months of playing down the virus calling it a “hoax”, saying his handling of it was 10 out of 10 giving himself an “A+” rating, Trump is as delusional today as when the pandemic first broke out.

His sole aim has been to ensure what is best for him and his family while the rest can go to hell in a handcart.

Millions here in the US a re f a c i ng s i x more months of living in fear af t e r i t emerged hi s administration turned down Pfizer’s offer for an extra 100 million doses of its Covid- 19 vaccine.

It has now l eft Americans facing the prospect that it will be June until some are giving the lifesaving shot.

The decision not to buy a vaccine for each and every American shines no greater light on Trump and the fantasy world he lives in.

For all the mistakes made by other g o v e r nments, non e were don e re ckl e ssly t o endanger l i v e s a s Trump’s actions have.

His lack of leadership, his refusal to wear a mask, his calls to open up businesses early all while saying the virus was a hoax, has cost thousands of lives.
