Beatting a path to top flight

- BY MICHAEL SCULLY

STEVEN BEATTIE wants to be a catalyst for Cork City’s top- flight return under

Colin Healy after rejoining the club.

Beattie, 32, is back at Turner’s Cross after a two- year stint in the US with Chattanooga Red Wolves in USL League One, culminating with him making the All League First Team as one of the best players in the American game’s third tier.

Beattie had hit the heights with the Leesiders, winning one League title and two FAI Cups.

So the ex- Bohemians and Sligo Rovers midfielder admits it was painful to watch Cork’s relegation to the First Division after his initial four- year spell with the club ended in

November 2018.

“I am just delighted to be

back,” he said. “It is obviously very different from 2016/ 17/ 18, but it is a new challenge and I am home.

“I always wanted to come back at some stage, now I am here and I want to enjoy my football again.

“I know Colin very well from playing with him in 2015 – a great man, a brilliant coach and he did a fantastic job at the academy. I just want to get started now and try to get the club back to where it belongs.”

Healy welcomed the signing, saying: “It’s great to have Beats back. He has been a fantastic player for the club, won a lot of trophies and he brings a lot of experience into the dressing room.

“He can play in a number of different positions, he is one of those players who can play anywhere. He will give us everything he has, and those are the kind of players we want.”
