Virus could destroy us, says Nuno

- BY DAVE ARMITAGE and DAVE ANDERSON

WOLVES boss Nuno Espirito Santo fears the break up of the Premier League if football puts the brakes on the season.

Nuno believes the Covid- 19 crisis is the biggest threat to football as we know it.

With fixtures coming a cropper, the Wolves head coach called for a crisis think- tank to address the issues.

Nuno said: “If we stop, everything will change. A new football will come, probably with a Super League. It will be a matter of which clubs will survive. It’s a tough decision.

“The schedule will go crazy and it will be impossible to finish the league and think about the Euros.”

Nuno ( above) prepares his side for the visit of Everton tonight, saying: “I see a lot of opinions coming in. Maybe it is the right time to get together and hear all the voices. People from public health, the Premier League, broadcasters, players, the press, fans – anyone who can give a valid opinion.

“The Premier League should take the first step and then try to get everybody involved.”

Asked if he feared the emergence of a ‘ Super League’, he added: “Four or five months ago there was something in the air about that. It’s based on the survival of the industry, probably at the expense of other clubs.”

Fellow Prem boss Chris Wilder claims he would not be surprised if the season did not finish because of the rising infection rates.

Sheffield United skipper Billy Sharp and Phil Jagielka have just returned from bouts of self- isolating.

“I don’t think anybody would be surprised if football gets suspended,” said the United boss. “We will go with what the Government and the Premier League say.”
