RASHFORD: THE 9-0 IS A LIFT SAINTS CALL IN THE COPS

- BY DAVID MCDONNELL BY TONY BANKS

MARCUS RASHFORD says Manchester United must use their rout of Southampton to get their title bid back on track.

United’s 9-0 win equalled the biggest victory in the Premier League era, matching their triumph against Ipswich in 1995 and Leicester’s last season, which also came against Saints.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side needed to get back to winning ways having dropped seven points from 12 and Rashord (right) said: “Hopefully it can push us all in the right direction for the rest of the season. We needed a night like that, just to get us going again.”

Rashford, a boyhood United fan, said the goal glut against Saints reminded him of growing up watching Sir Alex Ferguson’s Reds.

Rashford added: “I remember watching games here, they were always exciting games, scoring four, five, six goals.”

POLICE are investigating after Southampton youngster Alexandre Jankewitz became the latest target of online racist abuse.

Jankewitz, 19, was sent off after just 82 second of Saints’ 9-0 thrashing at Manchester United on Tuesday for a bad tackle on Scott Mctominey. The Swiss-born midfielder was later subjected to vile racist abuse on his Instagram account. Southampton have reported the abuse to police, who last night launched a probe.

The club said: “Our club prides itself on its inclusive nature and supporters who stoop to such abhorrent and archaic standards are not welcome as Southampton supporters, or anywhere else within football.

“The club will continue to fight to remove such people from our sport and our community in order to protect our players, our staff, Southampton fans and football supporters around the world who recognise and celebrate diversity that makes football special.”
