Top boys and girls names revealed

JACK was the most popular boys name in Ireland for the 13th year in a row as Grace claimed the top spot for girls in 2020.

Making up the rest of the top five were James, Noah, Daniel, and Conor.

John has fallen down the list over the years, with figures showing 193 newborns being given the name in 2020.

Rian rose most in popularity by 33 places from 119th to 86th.

As for the girls, 410 babies were given the name Grace last year. After nine consecutiv­e years at the top, the name Emily was beaten in 2020.

Fiadh, Emily, Sophie, and Ava rounded out the top five girls’ names.

There were seven new entrants to the top 100 for girls – Penny, Luna, Cora, Fiadh, Croia, Elsie, and Paige.

Croia – the name Conor Mcgregor gave to his daughter – has grown most in popularity, moving from 162nd place in 2019 to 95th in 2020. CSO statistici­an Carol Anne Hennessy said: “Sonny was the only new entrant into the top 100 for boys in 2020.

“The boys’ names with most growth in popularity in terms of rank between 2019 and 2020 were Rian rising most in popularity, jumping 33 places from 119th place to 86th place. Similarly, Eoghan moved 29 places from 108th place in 2019 to 79th in 2020.”

The CSO also pointed out that over the years, girls have been given a wider variety of names than boys – with 4,624 registered compared to 3,715 for boys.

Some less popular names included Orion, Creed, Romeo, Klay, Seadna, Zaria, Vienna, Fodhla, Marlee, and Roxie.
