GIRLFRIEND LEFT ME BUT WANTS TO MOVE BACK IN

My girlfriend left me a few weeks ago and moved back in with her parents. We’d been together quite a long time – five years – but she said she’d realised she wasn’t in love with me any more and wanted to make the break now to give us both the chance to meet other people.
I was totally shocked and heartbroken and, at the time, it seemed there was no way back. Her mind was made up.
However, she’s been back in touch, saying she thinks she’s made a mistake and asking to give things another shot.
What do I do? I’ve spent the past few weeks crying into my beer, trying to get over her and now this. I’d appreciate your advice.

Sometimes when people aren’t sure about the relationship they take a break from it to see how they feel, so maybe that’s what’s happened here. This time apart has made her realise she misses you and does want to be with you.
However, it is hard to let someone back in who’s smashed your heart into a million pieces. So, if you do decide to give things another shot, don’t instantly carry on where you left off – take it slowly and talk about it.
And I think you have to explain that you’re now concerned that as soon as there’s a wobble, she’s going to dump you and run home to her parents.
Hopefully, as we come out of lockdown, you can go back to the dating stage – meeting up for a drink or dinner – instead of going straight back to living together.
But be cautious. Being in lockdown means this separation hasn’t really been tested properly. She’s been cooped up with her parents and there hasn’t been the opportunity to meet anyone else.
