IRELAND is set to sizzle in the summer sunshine with the mercury predicted to reach a balmy 25C this weekend.
Temperatures hit 20C in Dublin yesterday but skies remained mostly dull.
But Met Eireann said the weather looks set to stay warm, sunny and largely dry – with Sunday predicted to be the hottest day of the year so far.
The previous highest temperature was recorded in Newport Furnace, Co Mayo, when temperatures soared to 23.1C on May 30.
Forecaster Paul Downes said early indications show the weekend weather outlook is very positive.
He added: “We’re looking at good sunny spells developing on Saturday and there will be cloud in the west at times but temperatures will range from 18C to 22C.”
The forecaster revealed counties such as Carlow, Kilkenny and Tipperary look set to experience the warmest conditions on Saturday.
Mr Downes added: “Sunday looks pretty similar and temperatures look like they could creep up to the mid-20s.
“There is growing agreement amongst the [weather] models that high pressure will build in over the weekend creating that more stable airmass and giving us good sunny spells.
“On Sunday the region with the warmest temperatures looks like being Kildare, Meath, Westmeath down to maybe Carlow.”
Meanwhile, the forecaster said the mercury will climb to 22C today and added: “There will be some sunny spells and the best of it will be in the East.
“Temperatures will range from 17C to 21C and locally it could get up to 22C in spots, but it doesn’t look too widespread.
“North-eastern coastal counties between Louth, Meath and Dublin and the Midlands look to have the better chances on Wednesday and Thursday of [the warmest weather].
Mr Downes said tomorrow will be warm and humid with a mix of sunny spells and scattered outbreaks of rain at times.
He added: “The best conditions will be in the east once more and highs of 17C to 23C and it will be warmest along the east coast.
“A good portion of the country will see temperatures up between 19C and 22C anyway.”
