‘OUR SPIRIT IS THE SAME AS CLASS OF 92’

- BY JOHN CROSS

ANDREAS CHRISTENSEN has warned Denmark are being inspired by their Class of 92.

The Danes famously stepped off the beach in 1992 to replace Yugoslavia, who had suffered last-minute disqualification, and went on to win the tournament (Brian Laudrup with the trophy, below).

Now Denmark are on a mission again because of Christian Eriksen, and Chelsea defender Christensen admitted they are a powerful force because they are playing for a cause.

The Danish centre-back said: “The spirit is probably the most important thing. We’ve drawn comparisons to the Class of 92, but for us it’s more of a motivation thing.

“We know that anything can happen in football and that kind of shows it.

“That makes us believe and, after what happened in the first game (to Eriksen), it has been a team on a mission and we are kind of thriving on it.

“That’s why we feel we are at our best. We know England and all these big teams have a lot of qualities. We have that as well, but we are working as a team and that’s our big strength.”

Christensen, 25, has already won the Champions League with Chelsea and is now dreaming of another major trophy, and believes it could be Denmark’s spirit which beats England.

He added: “It would be an awesome summer if we can do that, but we’ve just got to get past England first.

“I think they have found a collective thing, they have a spirit and play as a team. They have got individual qualities as well, but I think it will be the team that wants

it the most.”
