A VILLAGE in the North has been left in shock after the death of a father of six following an incident at a lake.

The man was named locally as Peter Jones, from Boho in Co Fermanagh.

The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene at Lough Melvin at around 10am on Wednesday in order to try and assist, with teams from Belleek and Enniskillen also responding to the incident.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “Police can confirm a 55-year-old man has tragically died following an incident in the Lough Melvin area of Fermanagh on July 21.

“It was reported that at around 10am, a man had gone into the water in the area.

“Officers attended the scene along with other emergency services colleagues, including the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service and Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

“The man was treated at the scene, where he sadly passed away. The death is not being treated as suspicious at this stage.”

SDLP councillor John Coyle said Mr Jones’ passing has left the area in shock and he is urging people to enjoy the water safely during the current heatwave.

He added: “I send my condolences to the family of the man who has died. It’s a total shock for everyone. It’s a tragedy given the beautiful weather we’ve all been enjoying recently.

“I would urge people to be cautious when entering the water and to ensure others are nearby and if you do get into difficulty that there’s a buoy ring in the vicinity.”

Sinn Fein Cllr Anthony Feely said: “My thoughts are with the family, friends and loved ones of Peter Jones who tragically lost his life.

“I offer my condolences to his wife Martina, their four sons and two daughters and all the rest of the family.

“Peter was a very hardworking family man and a great community man too, who was heavily involved with Derrygonnelly Harps GAA.”
