Joe’s in the firing ’Line
Caller asks host, ‘are you a big fat s***e?’
rte star Joe duffy was asked if he is a “big fat s***e” by a liveline caller after a discussion involving the Great Famine, eamonn Holmes and Tina Turner took a bizarre turn.
The show kicked off yesterday with the host at the helm, having returned from a holiday at the start of the week.
The Doagh Famine Museum in Co Donegal had faced criticism from a UCD academic over the accuracy of its exhibits in recent weeks but the curator and owner of the exhibit – Pat Doherty – was on the show yesterday to defend it.
One Belfast-based caller, who identified herself as Patricia Holmes, rang in and greeted Joe in Irish before saying she had previously visited the museum.
She said: “Do you know what, Joe, I’m sitting here crying. I didn’t know the information about what we’re talking about now. It’s really upsetting.
“I’ve been up to yer man’s place and I thought there was going to be someone giving out about political s***e! There was none of that going on when I was there.”
The RTE host then asked
Patricia about how Belfast had been on July 12.
She answered: “Ach Joe, wind your neck in, will you?
Sure you know the friggin’ craic. Thank God, it was all quiet. I was in Galway, I wasn’t up here.
“Joe, can I ask you a favour? Tell Ronan Collins don’t be playing Simply The Best by Tina Turner. Right?
“And another thing, I was in Galway, and I heard the Sash, he played the Chieftains.
“Tell Ronan not to play that again. That’s only two songs. You do your research Joe, you know why I don’t want to hear that song. It’s not on.”
At this point, Joe interjected, asking Patricia whether she was related to popular broadcaster Eamonn Holmes, whom Joe interviewed recently.
“I’m saying nothing. What did you like about him? Did he give you a dinner?”
Duffy replied: “I didn’t want a dinner. Look at me, I don’t need a dinner.”
Patricia asked: “Are you a big fat sh**e, are you?” Joe answered: “Yes, less dinners I need, not more of them.”
