PAIR HAVE A FARO WAY TO GO

- BY PAUL O’HEHIR

ROBBIE BRADY has been told he won’t be guaranteed a call-up for the World Cup clash with Portugal.

Ireland boss Stephen Kenny is a huge fan of the Euro 2016 star and hopes he can select him.

But a free agent after leaving Burnley, Brady is weighing up his next club move and is building fitness after yet another injury setback.

The 29-year-old hasn’t played since aggravating an Achillies issue in Ireland’s friendly draw with Qatar in Hungary in March.

James Mccarthy is another senior member of the Ireland squad on the hunt for a new club after leaving Crystal Palace.

Celtic have cooled their interest but West Ham, Brighton, Burnley, West Brom and Turkish side Sivasspor have all been linked with the

30-year-old (inset).

But Kenny admits the pair will need to find clubs and play games to face Portugal in Faro on September 1.

Asked if he was concerned about the pair, Kenny said yesterday: “Of course. They’re both immensely talented players who have already played in the European Championships.

“They’ve both had their fair share of injuries and it’s been a tough year for them.

“Robbie was just very unfortunate with that Achilles injury. He had been home in that period and doing a lot of training with Damien Doyle here in Dublin.

“Danny Miller, our physio, has been to see him to make sure his rehab is going well and Damien has been taking him for real intensive fitness work.

“I’m sure Robbie will have options. He’s just weighing them up to make the right decision for himself.”

But on the prospect of Brady (right) being up to speed to face Portugal, Kenny said: “It’ll depend on factors like getting pre-season training and match-time.

“He hasn’t played for a long time but has great versatility. For three games in six days, we’ll need our squad and he has the ability to impact the game.

“You’d want him in it, if he was anywhere near the level. It just depends on where he can get to.”

Mccarthy hasn’t played for Ireland since the Euro 2020 playoff defeat on penalties away to Slovakia in October.

And Kenny said: “With James, I’m not sure what his next move is. Again, he’s a quality player.”
