I’M WYN HE’S ALUN WYN ...IT’S NOT DIFFICULT!

Prop Jones often gets confused for his captain and namesake but he’s hoping to make a name for himself against the Boks

WALES prop Wyn Jones is aiming to make a name for himself in South Africa after years of being a victim of mistaken identity.

Jones will pack down against the Springboks for the British & Irish Lions in Cape Town with captain Alun Wyn Jones behind him in the scrum.

Front-rower Jones has already had his kit mixed up with that of lock Jones on this tour and been contacted on social media by fans requesting responses from his near namesake.

But as he prepares for his first Lions Test, he is still gutted the luxury hotel where the team have camped just outside Cape Town has not made the same mistake.

He said: “We have had a few, even with the kit here. He is AWJ,

I’m WJ, so then the bags sometimes have Jones on them, or Wyn Jones, we do sometimes get mixed up.

“But sadly we haven’t mixed up rooms, he’s still got the suite and I’m in the normal

room. When we had our first meet up, I had a Wyn Jones bag and another Jones bag.

“Obviously one of those was for Alun Wyn, the other one was for myself.

“It’s the same on Twitter, I’ve been tagged as captain of

Wales I don’t know how many times. I get a lot of message requests asking if I can do a message – they think I’m Alun Wyn.”

Four years ago Jones the prop was in a shadow Wales team as they played Tonga in

Auckland the same time as the Lions tour was going on.

Thousands of fans headed down to New Zealand and the now 29-year-old had a glimpse of a real Lions trip, which is not happening this time because of the pandemic.

He said: “I remember going out for a meal in Auckland and seeing a sea of red everywhere.

“The Lions supporters were in every bar and restaurant you could look at.

“The following was unbelievable and as a player you always want to be involved in those scenarios.

“The stadiums in New Zealand probably had more red than black in. Sadly this time around it’s not quite the same as that but we are fortunate to have plenty of support from back home.

“The games are not quite the same, but you still have the same pressure of trying to win a series.”

If the Lions do get a series win, everyone will know Wyn Jones’ name.
