Shels put on a show of four-ce

- BY DAVE DONNELLY

SHELBOURNE joined Peamount United at the top of the Women’s National League as they breezed past Athlone Town in torrential rain at Tolka Park.

Emily Whelan set Shels on their way to a 4-0 victory with her seventh goal of the season, a fine strike from 20 yards that zipped past keeper Abbiegayle Ronayne.

Alex Kavanagh doubled the lead with a penalty, her first goal since returning from a long-term injury, moments after Saoirse Noonan had seen her spotkick saved by Ronayne.

Leah Doyle netted goal number three from close range midway through the second half.

Noonan missed a second penalty after she was fouled in the box, but she did manage to find the net two minutes from time.

At Dalymount Park, Bohs trounced Treaty United 5-1.

Lisa Murphy and Erica Burke handed Bohs a 2-0 half-time lead, while Abbie Brophy, Chloe Darby and Lara Phibbs made it five before Jenna Slattery scored a consolation penalty.

In Galway, a stunning strike from Eva Mangan was as good as it got for Cork City, who soon fell behind to goals from Chloe Singleton, Kate Slevin and Emma Starr.

Aoife Thompson and Ellerose O’flaherty scored either side of Starr completing her brace, as the Tribeswomen ran out handsome 6-1 winners.

DLR Waves’ home game with Wexford Youths was postponed after heavy rain left the pitch unplayable.

Peamount also saw their scheduled match with FC Nike Tbilisi cancelled following a Covid-related issue in the Georgian champions’ camp.
