VILLA FANS WILL GO HEAD OVER HEELS FOR INGS

The Holte End is crying out for a new hero after Jack and it’s going to be Danny says legend Gary Shaw

ASTON VILLA legend Gary Shaw reckons Danny Ings is stitched on to become a Holte End hero.

European Cup winner Shaw was there to see the £25million new boy hit a goal-of-the-season contender. And he was given a big thumbs-up from Shaw, the golden boy of Villa’s golden era.

The blond goal ace (right) hit the net 18 times in Villa’s 1981 title-winning season and was there in Rotterdam to lift Europe’s biggest prize.

With £100m Jack Grealish hopeful of following the same track at Manchester City, Villa fans are desperate for a new name to chant. And Ings fits the bill, according to Shaw, who has impeccable credentials to judge all things Villa.

Ings made it two goals in his first two games with an acrobatic overhead kick that flew past Toon keeper Freddie Woodman in first-half stoppage time.

Matty Cash hurled a long throw into the box and nothing looked on when Tyrone Mings flicked it into the mixer with his head. But Ings showed the kind of instinct that earned him three England caps, readjusting himself perfectly to take it on with his back to goal.

Shaw believes everything is in place for the former Liverpool

man to be the darling of the terraces, saying: “The Holte End have taken to him already. They don’t see a goal like that too often. It was a fantastic goal.

“No disrespect to his former club Southampton, but hopefully this is a club on the up and he can play a big part in that for two or three years. I fancy him getting quite a few goals this season.”

The class finish from Ings seconds from the interval had extra impact because of Callum Wilson’s early miss at the other end.

Newcastle striker Wilson shrugged Mings aside and raced through but, with only keeper Emi Martinez, to beat, shot over.

By the time the two next clashed in a controversial penalty call, Anwar El Ghazi (celebrating, below) had put the West Midlands side 2-0 ahead from the spot.

Toon boss Steve Bruce was furious about the 75th-minute incident which saw Martinez poleaxe Wilson as the striker raced into the box.

The keeper was booked for a cage-fighter challenge that flattened Wilson but the Toon

hitman was adjudged to have been offside and you sensed that Newcastle’s last chance of getting anything from the game had just evaporated. Bruce groaned: “All the big decisions went against us. What was he offside by? His toe? I feel disappointed with VAR.”

Villa manager Dean Smith is drooling at the prospect of seeing Ings and Ollie Watkins up front together. Watkins was

Villa’s top scorer last season but is still recovering from a knee injury. Smith said: “Danny is a regular goalscorer at this level. We also have Ollie, who has missed the first couple of games but scored 16 goals last season.

“It will be exciting to see the two of them together. I bought Danny to the club because I thought they would really complement each other.

“Danny brings so much. He has a great personality.

“I did my due diligence before bringing him in.

“I spoke to coaches he has worked with before and everyone was very complimentary about the sort of lad he is.

“He has settled into the dressing room straight away and he will lift the dressing room. I’m not only pleased with Danny Ings the player but also Danny Ings the person.”
