A NIPPY, NATTY BIKE FOR DAILY COMMUTE
LATEST figures from the Motorcycle Industry Association show sales of electric bikes rose a massive 188% for the year to the end of August compared to 2020.
That means a huge 3,848 battery-powered bikes have been sold already this year.
As Tony Campbell, chief executive of the MCIA said: “I am running out of words to use that describe the market growth we are experiencing.”
In the 4-11kw, or 125ccequivalent class, sales have increased by 93% this year.
Falling into this category is the Horwin EK3, which is distributed in the UK by Artisan Electric.
First impressions are that the bike resembles a classic Vespa-style scooter, but with some interesting up-to-theminute twists.
The smooth front-end lines are augmented by parallel strip white LED running lights top and bottom, and on either side of the scooter.
A rather cool feature is that when you switch off the ignition, the lights have a delay function, allowing you to safely reach your garage or front door. The key fob has a remote which means you can also start, turn off and immobilise the scoot from afar.
It’s all automatic, of course, so just start up and twist and go. The instant torque is, well, instant and very impressive. Make no mistake, the EK3 is quick.
It has a 3kw motor, but that has a 6.3kw maximum output, making it one of the most powerful electric bikes in its class. It races up to 60mph smoothly.
That extra power and speed does impact on the range, with an expected mileage of 40-50 miles. Plenty for most journeys, although range can be increased by adding a second battery.
There are three ride modes, and even reverse. Handling and braking are surprisingly good, aided by a 14in front and 13in rear wheel. A full charge of the removable battery takes around four hours and you can fit a full-face helmet under the seat.
The EK3 really is a great little scooter – roomy, comfortable and easy to ride, super quick for the class, offering great visibility with that lighting, and it looks fantastic too.
