SECURITY INCREASE FOR UNITED STARS AFTER TERRIFYING LINDELOF BREAK-IN

- BY DAVID MCDONNELL

MANCHESTER UNITED will step up security at their players’ houses during matches following a break-in at Victor Lindelof’s home while his family were there.

His wife Maja and two young children were at the property on Wednesday when raiders struck while the defender was away playing in a 3-1 win at Brentford.

Neither she nor their boys - a baby and a three-year-old - were harmed and Sweden international Lindelof has been given compassionate leave to support them and will miss today’s game against West Ham.

Reds interim boss Ralf Rangnick said more safeguards will be introduced in the wake of the burglary, which comes just weeks after Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo was injured during a break-in at his home.

“We will have a meeting at our hotel where the club will speak to the players about what type of actions can be taken to increase the level of security, what is necessary and where the club can support players in those areas,” said Rangnick.

“This is something the club will speak to the players about in the next couple of weeks and hopefully make their houses more safe and secure in the future.”

Lindelof was told of the incident after United’s win in west London, with Rangnick supportive of the 28-yearold’s wish to stay with his family following their ordeal.

“I spoke with him at length on our flight back home from London and also this morning,” said Rangnick.

“We spoke for 20 or 25 minutes. He told me what actually happened, that this was a traumatic event, especially for his wife and three-year-old son.

“He said to me right now he needs to stay at home, he doesn’t want to leave his wife and family on their own, which I can fully understand, being a father of two children myself.

“We agreed he will not be on duty tomorrow for the game.”

United released a statement which read: “We can confirm that a break-in occurred at Victor Lindelof’s house during the away game against Brentford.

“His family, who were at home at the time, were unhurt but clearly shaken.

“This was a distressing experience for them, and for Victor when he learned of it after the game, and the club is providing them with our full support.

“We encourage anyone with information about the crime to contact the police.”
