Tributes for cyclist Mark killed in road smash horror
TRIBUTES were paid yesterday to a well-known businessman who was killed in a cycling accident at the weekend.
Mark Flood, who was in his 60s, died following the tragic incident on the R731 at Ballywilliam, New Ross, Co Wexford on Sunday.
It is understood the married father, who was a member of the Barrow Wheelers, swerved to avoid an obstruction on the road while with a group of cyclists and is believed to have hit a tree.
The alarm was immediately raised and emergency services were on the scene within minutes. However, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His body was taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford where a postmortem will be carried out.
The local coroner has been notified.
STATEMENT
A Garda forensic team examined the scene for several hours as is normal practice.
In a statement on its Facebook page Barrow Wheelers paid tribute to Mr Flood saying; “Yesterday we lost one of our Hero’s (sic). Rest in Peace our forever loved Friend Mark Flood.”
One of the hundreds of condolence messages read: “So sorry to hear this devastating news. Mark was an absolute gentleman and I aways enjoyed the chats with him. He was always so kind.”
Mr Flood, who ran the family-owned Brooks Jewellers on Charles St, New Ross, is survived by his wife Mary, daughters Rachel and Sarah and his mother Vera.
Gardai are appealing for anyone with information to contact them especially those who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, to make it available to them.
