WHAT: The newly opened Zog Playland at Warwick Castle. The old Midlands favourite for a family visit has launched a new outdoor fun zone for little kids (themed around the much-loved Julia Donaldson book and cartoon). Day tickets from €29pp, under-3s free. Annual pass €77pp, off-peak pass €53pp. warwick-castle.com WHERE: Just off the M40. You can’t miss it, it’s well signposted. EXPERIENCE: The new Zog Playland is great, and exactly what the castle needs to attract all ages. With a zipwire, sandpit, slides and belching lions/smoking dragons (that sounds like a good idea for a film...), you’ll have trouble dragging your young ’uns – it’s suitable for ages up to 10 – away from it.

But the castle’s old favourites shouldn’t be missed. The birds of prey show The Falconer’s Quest is still a thrill for young and old, while the Horrible Historiesthemed maze is fun to get lost in for toddlers, teens and grown-ups. Nerdy adults (and nerdy kids) will also enjoy the history of the Great Hall, and its waxwork displays, too.

It really offers something extra for a group with a young child or two, if they’re a bit small for the castle’s other sword-fighting and arrow-flinging attractions. QUIBBLES: Restaurant service was slow at the otherwiseexcellent Knight’s Village – an option if you are planning to stay overnight. So go early if you have younger kids who will get grumpy/hungry waiting, although they do put on a very entertaining knights’ sword fight to keep you occupied.

The Knight’s Village lodges offer a beautiful and peaceful stay just a few minutes’ walk from the castle (glamping tents are also available in warmer months). VERDICT: The medieval wonder of Warwick Castle has always been a great destination. Zog’s Playland adds something extra for parents with younger children. Joust do it.
