JAMES CACHET’S IN
Guineas double for Doyle as filly leads all the way
CACHET put the seal on training prodigy George Boughey’s rapid ascent to the top of his profession with a 16-1 victory in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas.
And the all-the-way triumph gave jockey James Doyle – successful aboard the Charlie Appleby-trained Coroebus in the 2,000 Guineas on Saturday – a Classic double.
Boughey, right, who began training in 2019 after seven years working for Hugo Palmer in Newmarket, saddled Mystery Angel – his first runner in a British Classic – to finish second last year’s Oaks.
And after watching Cachet, winner of the Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket last month, cling on by a diminishing neck from 33-1 shot Prosperous Voyage, the 30-year-old laughed: “It was a long final furlong!
“I absolutely didn’t think I’d be here so soon. We had four horses two years ago and the highest-rated was 62 – so to have a filly like her is amazing.
“It’s bizarre to win a Guineas – two years ago I was just dreaming of having a winner at Bath.”
Doyle, who shed tears of joy after his 17-year wait for a first British Classic had ended on Saturday, said: “It’s incredible, and yesterday was just incredible.
“I’ve ridden some big winners around the world but I’ve never had a feeling like that – it feels like a complete blur and a whirlwind at the minute.
“We knew she wears her heart on her sleeve and knows the track inside out, so I felt as long as we could get those cheap sectionals midway – which it felt like we’d got – I could be brave and let her use her stride.”
Tuesday, who came home a length and three-quarters back in third, is the 7-2 favourite for the Cazoo Oaks at Epsom on June 3 but her trainer Aidan O’brien warned: “She could go to an Irish 1,000 Guineas along the way.”
