COUNTRY music star Nathan Carter has told how singing for the Pope was the highlight of his career.

The singer said performing for Francis when he visited Ireland in 2018 is his biggest gig yet.

He told the Irish Mirror: “For me and my family, singing for the Pope was the proudest moment of my career.”

Nathan – born in Liverpool to parents from Newry – has been based in Fermanagh for the past decade.

His Irish grandad John Mccoy was particularly happy with the performance at the World Meeting of Families event in Croke Park, with an attendance of 82,000. Nathan, 31, said: “My grandad’s a very strong Catholic and goes to Mass every day.

“So for him to see me sing for Pope Francis it was an emotional moment.”

Nathan’s new single This Journey is a wedding song.

He said: “Just with this song, it’s a pure wedding song. I’m not very romantic myself but the song really is.

“It was written by my friend Shay Healy who sadly died last year. It was his last song that he’d written, as far as I know.

“He sent it to me a couple of years ago and I recorded it out in France. I came across it again three or four months ago and thought, ‘That’s a great recording’.

“At least Shay’s legacy will live on through music. He’s such a good songwriter.

“He was always sending me stuff, but this really caught my eye. We did the video for it in Lough Erne, we wanted to make it all inclusive for everyone.”

So Nathan and his team included minority groups from across society.

It features gay and straight and black and white people in the video.

Nathan said: “You name it, everyone is in it. At the end it says: ‘Love is Love’ which says it all.”

Nathan is now offering to sing at the wedding of one lucky couple to celebrate his new single.

He added: “I thought – why not? It’s a good way to get people sharing the song and I’ll sing it at their big day.”
