COACH Davy Fitzpatrick was pleased as punch when his family were crowned Ireland’s Fittest.

Super-fit father Donal, 46, mum Margaret and sons Danny, 17, and 15-year-old Finn Nugent were put through their paces on The Mountain in Kilruddery .

Hurling manager Davy said he never lacked confidence in his team on the hit RTE One show. He added: “I’m so proud, absolutely thrilled, 10 years in it still feels every bit as good.”

Co Louth dad Donal added: “He [Davy] was the fifth part of our team, he was feckin brilliant. Definitely proud, the Wee County is not wee here, getting to put Louth on the map.”

Mags Nugent added: “It’s an unbelievable feeling, to do this with your family, I’m at a loss for words to describe it.”

The family, whose main fitness interests include rugby, basketball, pilates and athletics, saw off competition from

Donncha O’callaghan’s Finnegans from Cork, and Anna Geary’s two teams, the Gallaghers from Donegal and the Fitzsimons from Wicklow.

The four families took on the challenges Mountain Madness and Back Against the Wall for points, before the bottom two faced an eliminator and the loser exited the competition.

With three families remaining, they took on the gruelling Wall of Pain.

Only two families made it through to the Grand Final, with the Nugents having the edge over The Fitzsimons. Speaking before the tense duel for the title, Davy said: “The Nugents are going into the final as underdogs, but we’ll fight with everything we have and take it from there, we want the title of Ireland’s Fittest Family going to Louth and we can make that happen.”

As well as the coveted title, the family also took home €15,000.
