COMEDIAN Kevin Mcgahern has admitted criticism from Dancing With The Stars judges can “get you down”.

His comments came as his pro dance partner Laura Nolan said the panel are “undermarking” them.

Kevin and Laura opened Sunday’s RTE show – which saw Paul Brogan voted out – with their energetic cha-cha-cha, scoring 20 points.

Speaking afterwards, Kevin, 36, said the criticism has an impact.

He said: “It can get you down. I had a good chat with Stephanie [Roche] there and it’s very hard to not get down about the judge’s criticisms but you also have to keep in mind that it’s the public that will decide your fate and they’re a lot more generous.”

But Laura, 28, added: “I think we’ve been slightly undermarked each week. I’ve been very happy with the comments, but I just really want the scores to reflect that.”

The Cavan native said he found it a shock to realise he has become a role model to children who watch the show.

He added: “It’s scary. When you’re finding your social media feet with stand up, you’re thinking of other people your own age.

“But then you see five-year-old girls doing impressions and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I’m a role model’. I have a responsibility to young people now, which is terrifying. I have to really watch what I say.”

The former Republic of Telly host said he always wanted to take part in the series to learn a new skill.

He added: “I think the mistake a lot of comedians make when they go on shows like this and try to be comedians and they think that this is going to get you extra tickets to shows and it’s not.

“So I decided to come on and focus on how good I can be at dancing.”
