How Niamh went from pop to shop

- BY LARISSA NOLAN news@irishmirror.ie

RYAN Tubridy has heaped praise on former Eurovision star Niamh Kavanagh for taking a customer service job at her local Tesco.

On his RTE morning show yesterday, Niamh told that during Covid she took up the temporary role, much to the amazement of customers who instantly recognised her.

“It took a lot of guts,” Tubridy told the 55-year-old, as she went on to explain that her main priority was to feed her family.

The supermarket job lasted just six months, and she joined at the same time as her then 17-year-old son who wasn’t thrilled at first to be working with his legendary mum, who won the Eurovision for Ireland in 1993 with the spine-tingling ballad In Your Eyes.

Niamh settled into her Tesco job straight away and told the radio host that nobody on the staff even knew herself and her teenage son were related for the first few weeks.

But Niamh admits “I loved the job!”, revealing that she had put “Masterchef Winner” on her CV while applying for the role.

She is now back to her main love of music and Tubridy yesterday suggested bringing her back on the Late Late Show to sing.

She said: “I have sung to 350 million people and also to seven people.”

A former AIB employee, Niamh revealed to Tubridy that while working at AIB, she once took a few days off to sing at the Grammys in the USA.

She also pointed out that at the time, people sometimes didn’t consider her a serious musician as she held on to a bank job.
