Airport’s jammers weekend No butts, litter is a real issue

-

DUBLIN Airport will be as busy as 2019 this weekend with 425,000 passengers expected to travel.

The four-day June Bank Holiday will see around 220,000 people departing from the hub with 205,000 arriving.

The airport has warned demand for car parking remains extremely high from Friday to Monday.

Anyone without a booking for their vehicle is urged to consider travelling to the airport “via public transport, taxi or being dropped off by a friend or relative”.

Graeme Mcqueen, media relations manager for the airport’s operators DAA predicted a busy weekend ahead for everyone.

He added: “This week’s passenger forecast is no different to recent weeks, with around 100,000 passengers travelling through Dublin Airport every day during the second half of May.”

CIGARETTE butts account for 60% of all street litter in the capital.

There was a sharp rise in fag ends found across county Dublin during the Big Beach Clean in Dollymount, Clontarf, Skerries, Sutton and Malahide.

There was also significant cigaretterelated rubbish recovered at The Royal and Grand Canal, The Liberties, Lucan Park and Tallaght.

One community group, in particular, Clontarf Tidy Towns, removed around 50kg of litter on their Big Beach Clean event, including 2,700 cigarette butts.

Keep Our Beaches Clean spokeswoman Louise Hastings said: “We were having a big issue with butts being thrown in the pier, the car park, the toilets and hot spots on the beach.

“The volunteers were spending so much time picking up the butts, it’s so tedious.”
