NEARLY one in three adults in Ireland have never received anything for Valentine’s Day, a new study has found.

Research from Irish supermarket Supervalu also found that the majority of participants felt men are forgotten about on the annual day of love.

It comes as nearly a fifth of those who did respond said they shouldn’t get anything - not even a card.

More than 50 per cent did however, believe that men also deserve something nice on Valentine’s Day.

The survey also found that February 14 made 9 per cent of those asked feel lonely because they don’t have a partner to celebrate with.

It also found that 51 per cent of respondents planned to celebrate Valentine’s Day with 30 per cent of those declaring it’s a lovely occasion to celebrate with somebody they love.

But nearly 60 per cent said they’d prefer to stay in rather than go out to a restaurant.

More said they’d prefer to cook a meal with their partner than enjoy a takeaway.

Just 30 per cent said they’d be going out for dinner to celebrate the love fest.

Supervalu Marketing Manager, Shane Lynch said “Valentine’s is a big occasion on Supervalu’s calendar as we see the trend shifting towards staying at home, picking up a prepared meal and a quality wine to celebrate the occasion.

“Budgets are tight for many people post Christmas but they still want to mark the occasion, so we have a great range of Valentine’s meal offers and wines to ensure they celebrate in style.”

Valentine’s Day has been celebrated for hundreds of years but where, when and how did it all begin?*

While there are various Christian saints by the name of Valentine, the most famous is probably Saint Valentine of Rome.

Born in Umbria, Italy in 226AD, Valentine was a priest at the time
