Woman dies from injuries after vehicle enters water

A WOMAN has died from injuries following a fatal crash that saw a vehicle enter the water at a pier.

The female was a front seat passenger in a car that collided with a wall before entering the water at Menlo Pier in Galway.

She was then taken to University Hospital Galway in a critical condition, where she was pronounced dead yesterday.

The driver, a man in his 40s, was also taken to hospital at the time of the collision which took place at around 7am on Friday, March 15.

Gardai have released an appeal for witnesses to the fatal incident to get in touch with them.

A statement from An Garda Siochana reads: “Gardai are investigat­ing a fatal singlevehi­cle road traffic collision that occurred on the morning of Friday 15th March 2024 in Galway city.

“Shortly before 7am, a car collided with a wall and entered the water in the Menlo area.

“A female front-seat passenger, aged in her 30s, was taken to University Hospital Galway in a critical condition.

“She was pronounced deceased earlier today (Monday 25th March 2024).

“The driver, a man in his 40s, was also taken to hospital at the time.

“The road was closed for a time and a technical examinatio­n of the scene by Forensic Collision Investigat­ors was conducted.

“Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

“Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the Menlo area of Galway city between 6am and 7am on Friday 15th March 2024 are asked to make this footage available to gardai.

“Anyone with any informatio­n is asked to contact Gaillimh Garda Station on 091 538000, the Garda Confidenti­al Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.”
