Cavanans lead way with UUJ

SIGERSON CUP final man of the match Darragh Canavan leads a magnificen­t seven Ulster University players on the Electric Ireland Higher Education Team of the Year.

Ulster University (UUJ) took home the Sigerson title for the first time since 2008 after beating University College Dublin (UCD) in the final in Tralee last month.

A man of the match display from Darragh Canavan, with a significan­t contributi­ons from his brother Ruairi, sealed the trophy for the Belfast side.

UU captain Ryan Magill, Fermanagh’s Josh Largo Ellis and Ronan Mccaffrey, Ben Mccarron and Niall Loughlin from Derry and Tyrone’s Oisin Mccann also make the stadout XV.

Beaten finalists UCD have five representa­tives on the team. Beaten semi-finalists, University of Limerick (UL) feature twice while Maynooth University have a single player included.

The Higher Education Hurling and Football players of the year will be named at the awards ceremony on Monday, April 1 .
