Garda homes searched in hit-run probe
GARDA officers’ homes were raided and a phone seized in the probe into a fatal hit-and-run, the Irish Mirror can reveal.
One garda’s locker at a station in the North-west was also searched by members of the Garda Ombudsman Commission investigating the incident that led to the death of GAA coach Niall Maceneaney last month.
The GSOC is probing the alleged involvement of an off-duty garda in the incident.
Mr Maceneaney was hit by a car registered to a serving garda, who was off-duty at the time, and was left for dead in the early hours of Sunday, March 17, on the Rathmullen Road in Drogheda.
The vehicle left the scene and the garda under investigation has been suspended but not arrested.
TRACE
Mr Maceneaney was found unresponsive just after 2.40am and pronounced dead after the arrival of emergency services.
Earlier we revealed vital evidence – a registration plate from the suspected vehicle involved – was discovered at the scene which enabled investigators to trace its owner.
We also revealed CCTV footage tracing the movements of the suspect and vehicle will prove vital in the investigation.
Sources said: “So far no arrests have been made as investigators want to get every bit of evidence they can.”
Following the hit-and-run, The Garda Ombudsman Commission issued a statement appealing for witnesses.
It said: “GSOC would like to speak to any witnesses who observed any incident, activity or interactions at this time and location. GSOC would also welcome the provision of any CCTV, dash cam or mobile footage witnesses may have captured.”
Mr Maceneaney was hurling manager of Termonfeckin club St Fechin’s and led his side to the last two Co Louth Senior Championship finals.
