RYAN ANDREWS drew on frustration to create his own piece of Watford history at Vicarage Road.

Left out of Tom Cleverley’s side for fellow academy graduate Jack Grieves, teenager Andrews came off the bench to score Watford’s first winning goal at home since November 28.

Andrews, 19, said: “I knew when I came on that I needed to show what I could do and just prove why I should be playing.

“Everyone wants to be playing every game and every minute of the season and Tom gave me the chance at half-time to come on. Every full-back enjoys getting forward as there are goals to be scored and chances to be created.

“It’s an amazing feeling, especially on my 50th appearance, and to do it at home was even better.

“We knew that as it was our last game at home we had to show the fans what they wanted to see. No one wants to be at the last home game of the season and lose.”

After two seasons in the Championship, relegation parachute payments will now stop for Watford, leaving 34-year-old Cleverley to mould his own team using players he has brought through during his time as the club’s Under-18s coach.

Andrews (above) added: “We all want promotion next season. It’s not as easy as just saying it but, if we stay as a team and work hard, then it can be achieved.”

While Watford have made their managerial move, Sunderland go into this week’s final game of the season with interim boss Mike Dodds still in charge.

Dodds said: “I’m a little disappointed with results, of course I am, but I’m really happy with the way I have managed the group.

“It’s my third spell in charge and I’ll be the first to admit that in the first one I was like a rabbit in the headlights. This one has reaffirmed to me that I can do it. I haven’t felt out of my depth on the touchline.”
